Senior Innovation Scientist - Research, Flavors N. America

As Senior Innovation Scientist - Research within our US Flavor Innovation team, your key responsibility will be to participate in the New Product Development (NPD) project pipeline for the Business Unit(s). The scope of the NPD projects will range from basic execution of known technologies to long term development of unique and potentially patentable capabilities as needed to meet business objectives and align with strategy. Based in Hoffman Estates, IL, you will identify and assess strategic opportunities. Identification of new equipment, external collaborations and beneficial University partnerships are also within scope for this role. Regular progress reporting and tracking of key metrics relevant to the impact of NPD initiatives in driving enhanced revenue for the Business Unit(s) is also expected. You will be part of a network of Innovation and R&D scientists employed throughout the Global Sensient businesses. Developing a full understanding of the technical capabilities that exist across all businesses (e.g. Colors/Pharma) and being able to collaborate and leverage that expertise selectively to deliver outstanding results is also a key focal area for the role.



  • Use knowledge and experience to leverage technology transfer opportunities, working with internal and external partners to accelerate project delivery of proven new flavor technologies.

  • Identify and propose food technology opportunities through understanding of the structure / physical property functionalities of the complete product.

  • Lead innovation projects, using judgment and experience to identify the direction and areas of focus.

  • Create project plans that deliver upon agreed objectives and report progress as required.

  • Independently design and commission scientifically robust experiments while carrying out scientific work safely with an awareness of state-of-the-art technology.

  • Safely operate various laboratory and pilot plant equipment and commit to learning new equipment as required.

  • Ensure that laboratory and development areas are held to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP’s) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s).

  • Maintain precise experimental records.

  • Adjust to changing priorities and objectives as needed.

  • Authors or co-authors internal reports, external publications and/or innovation plans.

  • Demonstrate good leadership, decision making, and technical credibility to represent Sensient Flavors at customer meetings and presentations.

  • Assist in the launch of new technologies resulting in their successful adoption by commercial teams.

  • Mentor other scientists and technologists.

  • Develop network of external research resources, including universities and suppliers.

  • Maintains awareness of food industry developments, including scientific literature.

  • Ability to leverage cross-functional teams, such as Marketing, Sensory, Engineering, etc.




  • PhD in Food Chemistry, Chemistry or Food Science with 2+ years of Food and/or Flavor Innovation experience OR MS with 5+ years of Food and/or Flavor Innovation experience.

  • Experience coordinating global projects and working with external industry or academic partners.

  • Proven record of commercially successful launches.

  • Organized, self-driven and motivated. Takes initiative. Team player and creative problem solver.

  • Ability to focus on multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously.

  • Excellent collaborator and experience working cross functionally to get results.

  • Innovation minded. Excellent communication skills.

  • Should have knowledge of pertinent processes, regulatory guidelines and sensory testing.
