The Provost serves as the Chief Academic Officer of Alaska Pacific University (APU) in support of its mission, vision, values and Strategic Plan. 

As CAO, the Provost is formally responsible for assuring the quality and distinctiveness of the University's academic programs and the maintenance of academic standards. The breadth and depth of that responsibility means that the Provost assumes leadership, if not direct oversight, in almost all aspects of university operation. The Provost collaborates with the President, faculty, staff and students in setting overall academic priorities for the University, and overseas budgetary processes to carry these priorities forward. 

The Provost works collaboratively and consultatively across academic institutes and university departments to develop and deliver the curriculum, review programs, recruit and hire new faculty, and oversee faculty evaluation, development, and promotion. In support of APU's mission and strategic plan, the Provost supports and encourages Indigenous knowledge across educational programs, throughout the community, and with outreach. 

The Provost orchestrates the University accreditation processes including the internal and external assessment of academic programs. This includes implementing and making operational the University's Strategic Plan centered on its core themes along with accompanying operational metrics; overseeing the preparation of self-studies and reports necessary to meet accreditation requirements; and updating the Strategic Plan as necessary. The Provost is responsible for articulating and syncing the university's critical task (Student Learning Outcomes) with an appropriate organizational structure and fostering a culture of incentives and behaviors to achieve those outcomes. 

The Provost has direct oversight for academic institutes, student enrollment services, and the Dean of Students to promote "Student Success" defined by three primary metrics: students enroll, are retained, and graduate from APU. The Provost serves as chairperson for the university Coordinating Council, where policies are determined. The Provost serves on many central governance committees and oversees efforts for marketing, student recruitment, and retention activities to grow enrollments. 

The Provost works in collaboration with the members of the President's Council to ensure a high level of academic attainment, fiscal responsibility, and quality of student life; works closely with the President to respond to external regulatory agencies, foster town/gown relationships, generate support for and awareness of the University, and secure external funds for APU initiatives. 

Expectations of the Provost: 

In general, the Provost serves in an executive and primary leadership role, with expectations and responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Appoints, supervises, evaluates and provides ongoing support to Institute Directors to develop into effective leaders and administrators such that they can recruit, hire, and orient new faculty, support the faculty's responsibility for the curriculum, and develop them into effective teachers.

  • Assumes the traditional role as leader, advocate, and administrative supervisor of the faculty working with Institute Directors and through established faculty governance protocols.

  • Maintains an open, equitable system of faculty evaluation, reappointment, and promotion as defined in the faculty handbook; ensures that all stakeholders comply with the provisions of the Faculty Handbook and updates as necessary.

  • Provides leadership in teaching and learning including faculty development programs that engage faculty, strengthen APU's pedagogy, and provide opportunities for faculty to stay connected to their chosen academic disciplines.

  • Supports and encourages the processes by which Indigenous knowledge and culture are incorporated into the educational, organizational, and social structure of APU.

  • Encourages and fosters among faculty and staff a culture of sensitivity to community/student market-driven needs and nimble, responsive approaches to creating innovative academic programs such as project-based interdisciplinary learning communities to meet those needs.

  • Supports the integration of new technologies to enhance teaching and learning at the University and to collect the information necessary to prepare accountability reports for external agencies and performance reports for internal usage and improvements and store in database.

  • Manages the logistics of the academic enterprise on campus; serves as the main budget officer for Academics.

  • Supports the sponsored programs and projects as needed to review and recommend to the Advancement Director, Chief Financial Officer, and President all grant proposals related to academic matters.

  • Provides final budget and general program oversight for all grant activity in the academic area.

  • Maintains close relations with the Dean of the UAA/APU Consortium Library.

  • Develops and maintains cordial working relationships with administrative colleagues at Ilisagvik College, UAA, Eco-League, and other CIC institutions, Seattle University Law, American Indian Higher Education Consortium, etc., for the continuance of joint programs of mutual benefit to students and faculty across institutions.

  • Provides staff support to the Academic and Student Affairs committee of the Board of Trustees.


  • Knowledge related to regional accreditation.

  • Knowledge related to Tribal Universities or working with Indigenous populations preferred.

  • Skill in articulating academic issues to internal and external audiences.

  • Skill in providing academic administrative leadership in a consistent, creative, and accountable manner.

  • Skill in verbal and written communication appropriate to a collegiate setting.

  • Skill in working effectively with a diverse population.

  • Skill in managing multiple tasks and details in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Skill in showing a commitment to ethical values in the workplace.

  • Skill in demonstrates commitment to working closely with students as individuals and in groups.

  • Skill in communicating effectively and developing positive working relationships with a broad range of constituencies.

  • Skill in effectively managing student affairs.

  • Skill in student recruitment and retention.

  • Skill in building collaborative leadership and administrative processes.

  • Skill in building and managing budgets.

  • Skill in building town and gown relationships.

Terminal degree, doctorate preferable. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education beyond a Master's degree. 

Non-Supervisory: Six (6) years progressively responsible teaching experience. 
Supervisory: Four (4) years' experience in an education and administrative leadership role in a university setting.
